"Stream Light" Kaleah River and California Sister Butterfly

Sequoia National Park, 7"x 12" acrylic (Private Collection)
Off the Rio Grande at the Pecos
River Texas, January 12, 2007
after 275 miles through Big Bend
National Park and the Lower
Canyons.
On a 6 mile open ice crossing of Nipigon Bay from St. Ignace
Island to La Grange Island during a
12 day winter expedition
within the newly dedicated
Lake Superior National Maritime
Conservation Area; February 11, 2008.  Temperatures of 0 F
with a 15mph+ north wind in our faces yielded windchills in
excess of -20 F and made in necessary to complete the crossing,
pulling our heavy tobboggans without any significant stops.

Clic Extreme goggles.  Clic supplied
sunglasses for the crew including
these very stylish goggles I'm
wearing.  Gary's photographic magic
managed to get the reflections of
Chris and Jon but none of his camera
in this shot.

I was sure this Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was a
goner after hitting the window - totally limp and
unresponsive when I picked him up with his head
hanging.  I thought for sure I'd just be holding him
while he died.
Then his eyelid flickered.  I took him out into the
May sunshine and shielding him from the cold
wind let the sun warm him.  As signs of life
returned I had my father snap these shots.
I took the final one of him after he flew to the
cherry tree and did the drawing above for fun.

Finalist in the 2008 Federal Duck Stamp Competition (18th); Northern Shoveler
I hadn't entered for 10 years but had a nice background from my trip on the Rio Grande last year
where I'd seen tons of ducks (including Northern Shovelers). I didn't think backgrounds win Duck
Stamp competitions but felt like giving it a go.  Not as good as my 9th place in '95 but maybe I'll give
it another shot in '09 (less background focus though).  Photo of the piece will be up soon; available
